The purpose of environmental zones is to ensure that people living in urban areas do not run out of air when they are on the road. Waterways, on the other hand, are still dominated by smoke-emitting inland water vessels.
At the same time, there are already sophisticated technical solutions that would allow ships or passenger ships to clean up their act. At present, KEB is participating in the research project "BBGreen", which focuses on the concept of clean air. This cargo vessel, which uses battery-electric propulsion, uses a bed of air that lowers friction resistance between the hull and the water - by up to 40 percent.
To this end, a high-performance blower has been installed on the "BBGreen", which uses this air cushion to reduce friction the faster the ship is travelling. This principle is so effective that it automatically provides the vessel with a wide range. And exactly that has been the challenge of marine electro-mobility to date.
KEB's new Active Front End Technology (AFE) is used as the central energy management element - specifically as a continuous system for supplying all electrical units, the power unit and charging of the batteries from different sources. They supply up to 550 Volt and can be charged in just ten minutes.
KEB's AFE technology converts 600 kW alternating current into direct current, and transfers it into the batteries, precisely regulated. In this context, it is irrelevant whether the energy comes from the on-board generator or land, because the technology can convert both - a compact system for everything.
